Director's Statement
Through the eyes of Angelia, a 12-year-old girl navigating the complex landscape of bullying, loss, and isolation, I wanted to explore the dynamics of grievance and the transformative power of friendship.
Angelia faces a pivotal moment when her classmates dare her to engage in an act she feels uncomfortable with. Through this challenge, her journey reveals the profound truth that things are not always as they seem beneath the surface. She unearths the hidden depths of joy in her quest to belong, discovering that it can manifest in the unlikeliest places.
At its core, 'Broken Vines' is a coming-of-age tale that resonates with all ages. I aimed to explore the complexities of growing up and the pressures young people face to conform to societal norms. Through Angelia's experiences, we invite viewers to reflect on their journeys of self-discovery, encouraging them to find the courage to embrace their true selves, even when faced with adversity.
